Introduction

Since Hugo Chavez’s rise to power in 1999, Venezuela’s economy has been worsening and the country has become more and more dangerous. Chavez and his party, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela(PSUV), worked to put “chavismo” in place, a political ideology based on socialism, patriotism, and bolivarianism, named after Chavez. They called it “La Revolucion”, or “the revolution”, but it severely damaged the economy and quality of life of most Venezuelans. After Chavez’s sudden death from cancer in early 2013, a lot of people hoped for change, but were disappointed when PSUV’s new leader, Nicolas Maduro, won the election by 1.49%. Once again, the quality of life worsened. The citizens of Venezuela have been protesting and fighting for their rights, and the government has been responding with violence and bribes. Despite all this, Venezuela’s political situation doesn’t seem to be well known outside of actual Venezuelans. I hope to create awareness for the people of Venezuela, as well as document the actions of the government  and the hard work of the citizens and protesters, as well as any progress in the political and economic situation.
